Mazor X Robot
Mazor X is a surgical robot that facilitates precision and minimally invasive approaches in spinal surgeries.

The Mazor X robot is a state-of-the-art surgical system that achieves maximum precision for spinal surgeries. The compact design of this robot (composed of a workstation, a robotic arm, and an optical camera) minimizes the risks involved in these interventions, which are performed near sensitive nerve structures.
The Mazor X robotic system is involved in both the surgery itself and its preparation, as it features an optical camera that captures real-time images. These images allow for the planning of the surgical steps and also provide a volumetric assessment of the surgical field, helping the surgeon reach the desired point as precisely as possible.
Thanks to Mazor X, it is possible to perform minimally invasive surgeries that, in addition to being safer, promote faster recovery for patients.
How Does it Work?
Preoperative images (typically taken with a computed tomography scan) are entered into the Mazor X software so that surgeons can study the exact trajectory the surgical instruments should follow. Once established, this information is stored for the robotic arm to execute the instructions.
Since the arm has an optical camera, medical staff monitor the procedure in real time and verify the result before concluding the intervention.
What Are the Benefits of the Mazor X Robot?
Mazor X offers many benefits in spinal surgeries:
- It facilitates the planning of interventions by providing a more precise understanding of the patient's anatomy.
- Greater accuracy in surgeries, which reduces the risk of the patient suffering a nerve or neurological injury.
- Avoids the use of radiation in the operating room, as it is unnecessary to rely on X-ray images.
- Helps position the instruments in the most appropriate locations.
- Safer surgical interventions.
- Minimally invasive surgeries.
- Fewer complications and faster patient recovery times.
- In the future, as it is currently under development, it may perform some specific techniques automatically, such as nerve decompression or tumor resection.
When Is It Indicated?
The Mazor X robot is specially designed to treat spinal pathologies, primarily:
- Scoliosis: lateral curvature of the spine, which appears in the form of an S or C.
- Kyphosis: excessive forward curvature of the upper back.
- Spondylolisthesis: displacement of one vertebra over another.
- Spondylodiscitis: inflammation of the intervertebral discs and vertebrae of the spine.
- Spinal fusion.
- Tumors.
- Spinal fractures.
- Degenerative spinal pathologies.
What to Expect from the Mazor X Robot
A patient undergoing surgery with Mazor X does not notice any difference in the preoperative process or during the intervention, as the procedure is similar.
On the day of the surgery, the patient arrives at the operating room on a stretcher, wearing the hospital gown or pajamas. Once placed on the table, anesthesia is administered to keep them sedated during the procedure. Afterward, they are transferred to the recovery area, where they stay for several hours before being taken back to their hospital room to continue their recovery.
Patients treated with the help of Mazor X experience fewer complications after surgery and can return to their routine sooner than if a traditional operation were performed.
Specialties Where It Is Used
The Mazor X robot is used in spinal surgeries performed by specialists in traumatology and orthopedics.
